instead of my initial idea, I decided to go with the theme of a returning artist duo as it was a issue that is relevant in most genres if not all genres of music. I was practically, keen on doing this theme and relating it back to my female audience because it was a common topic in double page features in Hip Hop magazines. For it to fit into my female empowering magazine, I decided to include to successful women that were venturing back into the Hip Hop industry.
Double page spread article: hustle hard
Walking into the studio, it took me back to the days of TLC and Foxy Brown, where there was nothing but intense concentration and achievement in the air. You could tell that the women had been in the studio for days perfecting the perfected – an ethos only the greatest lived by. It had been years since I had first come across the women, they were no longer the sweet teens from the early 90s but now the refined women on top of an empire ready to remerge back into the limelight. Lyrical and MC Tyme were once the hottest young female rap artists of the start of the 90s, having had three albums go platinum. They toured the world, but intense competition from rival MCs caused the teens to rethink their career and confidence in themselves. “…success is only achieved by the people willing and able to take risks but along the way you will lose a lot but the gain will outweigh it all” is what I was told when they were nothing but a teens. I wanted to know if this is what they had planned for themselves so many years ago, to leave the rap game in pursuit of something greater only to return and have to start again from the beginning.
